We just went over to one of the local RV stores and purchased an adapter. Someone commented on the gas tanks (when we purchased our camper) and said we needed to upgrade them. The ones we have are single threaded and the new ones are double threaded…

Dear All, Thanks for the comments. We are new to RVing and this site has helped us learn how to fix things and now how to calculate the weight of the trailer. I tried tracking down an owners manual for the trailer (even called Prowler but they neve…

Just A little tip, I'm in the same boat as you guys, buying camper supplies and instead of buying a battery and a charger or a converter. If you're not planning on doing to much rustic camping, I opted for buying a DC power supply to run the few thi…

Hi all, I also have an old prowler about 20-22 ft. and I know it weighs exactly 3280 pnds because I took it to a truck stop by my house and got a weigh slip. I pull mine with a 02 ford explorer with a V6 and class3 factory tow package. It has dual a…

I had an older prowler and it pulled nicely with my 1500 dodge extended cab pick-up with the small V-8. What I did add was 2500 lb helwig spring kit in back about $250 10 ply E range tires in back (that'll cut down any sway from passing trucks) and…

PS. Are you sure it weights 6,000 pounds dry? I just noticed it's a 19 footer which should weight a lot less I think. Might want to check the weight. I suspect it's less than 4,000 pounds in which case a nice v8 powered half tone with factory tow pa…

Hi Paul & Nicole. The safest thing to do is to go to Trailer Life's Towing Guide which is kind of the "bible" for towing. It will rate almost all tow vehicles, including the Tundra variously equiped. The Tundra "might" do if equiped correctly with t…

We visited Appomattox Nat. His. Park the other day and I believe they were honoring the upcoming free admission weekend. For those over 62 years of age, you can get the National Park pass for only $10. That's usually the vehicle fee at a park. So…

The battery should be a deep cycle RV-series 24 or 27. The deep cycles take charge/discharge cycles better than an ordinary starter battery. 24 is smaller than 27 but you don't gain that much going larger. Camping World sells a sewer kit I like ver…

Good truck for pulling?

Dear All,

We are shopping around for trucks that have enough 'umph' to pull our 77' Prowler. According to the note on the trailer, it weighs 6000 lbs. dry. We've heard good things about the Toyota Tundra with the bigger engine. But we also heard that going uphill, the front can lift up. Any recommendations? We've never owned a truck before (just cars and SUVs).
Thanks for your insight!

Free Days at National Parks

Dear all,

Not sure if you knew this but entrance fees will be waived at all 391 National Parks and Monuments located across the U.S. on the following days:

June 20-21
July 18-19
August 15-16

Interior Secretary Ken Salazar announced these three 'fee-free' weekends. This doesn't happen often. On National Public Lands Day (the last Saturday in September) entrance fees are waived at national parks and monuments as well.

Take advantage of these three free weekends in case they don't do this next… Continue

Outfiting our RV - Suggestions Needed :)

Hi All,

We are buying all the important things for the RV... need suggestions for the following:

* Battery
* Generator (I think Pat answered this one already!)
* Sewer Kits
* Toilets (we have an Aqua-Magic III that came with the camper and it works fine and I'd rather not have to replace, but the idea of a seat that's been used by strangers for 32 years is a bit weird!) althought it might not be the original toilet.
* Tool Sets for the Road
* Gas Detectors

Any must haves you recommend?

Thank… Continue

Redoing Formica Countertops

Hi All. We just bought out first RV - a 1977 Prowler. We want to re-do the inside keeping it very 70s and one of the things we want to do is change the existing formica countertops. Does anyone have any experience with that? Any tips, advice, suggestions??? We're read that you can take the existing formica off (peel it using lacquer and a putty knife), sand down the surface to remove any adhesive, then get a formica kit and reface the countertops. Good? Bad? We'd like to see if anyone has done i… Continue

Most leaks are caused by old dry putty on the edge seams. That is where the metal trim attaches at the roof edge, etc. The putty turns into a cardboard like substance. Once water gets in a tiny gap and freezes, the gap is a hole...

I recommend re-puttying all the edge trim with putty tape or butyl putty tape available at most RV stores. It's a pain, but will stop leaks. The roof vents should be re-puttied as well and shimmed a little to raise them. (shims go between the roof metal and wooden rafter framing; 4" x 5" or so, tapered)

A Fantastic Fan is a great addition if you're going to pull the vent anyway. They really are fantastic at moving air and the company has a wonderful customer service department. They often ship parts for free if your Fantastic breaks...needs 12 volts, which is usually available at a near by ceiling light.

Eternabond is a good product. It is very useful for splits and tears in a rubber roof as well as end cap seams. Very good for a tear in a metal roof, too. I don't like it around vents because you may have to remove the vent one day...ditto for the edges.

Hope this has helped. There is no substitute for fixing it right, rather than patching temporarily. VK

Small world, we moved to our cabin from Fort Lauderdale. Big change!

Lets see, a 77 Prowler. I'll ask a few other members.
Your might also:
- Go to the SHOUTBOX on the home page and just type in what your looking for.
- Put Prowler in the Search box on the top right hand side of the home page here and see who comes up also as a "fellow" prowler owner, then e-mail them using "send message".
The search is on!

Hi Paul! Glad to see that you got into RVing. Particularly since you live in what may be the best state in the world to camp in. We'll wave as we go by this summer on the way to Craig, Colorado and our annual encampement at Ute Lodge.
